Macular Degeneration
Age-Related macular Degeneration (ARMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in the elderly. Untreatable vision loss causes more disability in older adults than nearly any other medical condition. By age 75, 10% of Americans are so handicapped that they can't read the newspaper, or drive a car…even with glasses. But, ARMD rarely leads to blindness because it only affects central vision; side vision usually remains intact.

In age-related macular degeneration, a small area in the back of the eye begins to deteriorate over time. This area, called the MACULA, is totally responsible for central, detailed vision. When the macula becomes damaged, the ability to see clearly at distance, up close or distinguish colors is severely affected. Vision becomes blurred and distorted, straight lines appear wavy or crooked and a dark or empty area appears in the center of sight.

Medical science has not yet determined why a healthy macula degenerates with age. ARMD does not appear to be caused by high blood pressure, diabetes, or using your eyes too much.

We do know that most people develop ARMD as part of the body's aging process. And the most common form is untreatable. But, a less common form of age-related macular degeneration, occurs when fluids caused by newly formed blood vessels leak into the eye. If detected early, this condition can be treated with laser, but early detection and prompt treatment is vital in limiting damage. Only 10% of diagnosed ARMD cases qualify for laser therapy. Tragically, only 5% will see the doctor in time.

Our doctors diagnose, counsel and treat patients with age-related macular degeneration. While there is not way to restore vision damaged by ARMD, regular eye exams, dietary supplements, low vision aids and laser therapy can help the patient with ARMD maintain independence and a full, active life.
