Red, irritated eyes can be due to infection on the eyelids, the eyelashes, the outer lining of the eye or inside the eye. This can be the result of bacteria, virus, fungus or allergy. Symptoms include: swelling, pain, itching, burning, discharge and a sandy, gritty feeling. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, you need an eye examination to determine the extent of the infection and proper treatment.
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelids resulting from overactive oil glands. This causes dandruff-like scales to form along the eyelashes and eyelid margins. Symptoms include: itchy, burning eyes; blurred vision, gritty, granular sensations and oily tears.
Treatment utilizes antibiotic eye drops, along with a regimen of warm compresses applied to the eyes and frequent eyelid cleansing with baby shampoo.
Iritis is an inflammation of the colored part of the eye...the IRIS. Because it occurs inside the eye, it can become sight-threatening if left untreated. Symptoms include: red eye, blurred vision, pain, tearing, and light sensitivity that develops rapidly over a few hours or days. Treatment utilizes antibiotics, steroids and dilating eye drops, ointments and warm compresses to relieve pain, reduce infection and dilate the pupil.
We encourage you to call our office if you notice any unusual symptom. Our doctors perform thorough eye examinations and provide clear, detailed patient instructions whether they're treating minor eye infections or sight-threatening diseases.
